Mast WORK PICTURES

Alvah Smith: The Third Floor

Stripping the mast and trying to remove the stainless steel through bolt below the spreader. It's in an aluminum tube. (The boats in the picture are not my boats)
It looked much worse in the bilge than in this and the next three pictures.

Setup a rap-around to cut off 2.5"

Cutting off the rotted section by hand was the best way.

(The removal of those 2.5 inches appears to have gotten rid of all the rot in the mast. - Ed.)
Mast head removed.
(This looks to be the top end of the masthead wiring dangling out from the top of the spar. - Ed.)
Removing foam from the bottom of the mast.
The foam in the mast is rather easy to break up and remove.
Removing the old wiring. (It looks like the pipe on the right side of the picture was used to break up the foam and remove it. - Ed.)
The old wiring removed from the mast.

Trying the new mast step on for fit.

Words of warning. (It's rather hard to read, but I suspect it says something like, "Don't let the mast or rigging get near high tension power wires or the whole boat will go, 'Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt!'" - Ed.)
You can see the light through the cleaned out spar.
